Conference Call Etiquette - By Polycom

Polycom, (A provider of phisical conference phones) and one of the premier listings in AsteriskExchange.com, recently shared a helpful guide to conference call etiquette. Here are their Top Do's and Don'ts of a Conference Call, naturally we modified and added our own to the list:

Do's

  • Watch the clock. Make good use of everyone's time. Set an end time for the call.
  • Come to the call with an agenda, clear objectives, and role expectations.

More company's blocking the "FREE" conferencing services in the U.S.

Expanding on our previous blog about free conferencing in the united states.

I found another provider in the United States that is blocking access to these "free conferencing facility's":

Whats the catch with free conference calling services

This is the best explanation of free conference calling in the US.
It describes how these services exist and where they make their money from.

This is also the reason we dont have free conference call facilities in Australia or New Zealand. (As we have a separate telecommunications act)

What’s the catch with United States free conference calling services?
Why do they only exist in the US and why not Australia or New Zealand?
Are they reliable? and Who is really picking up the bill?

Local New Zealand Company, Telephone Recording Playback & User Pin-less Conferences

Its been some time since our last update, but rest assured we have been working on some big things.

Advanced Options - With out Guest Pin

We have made the requirement of setting a user pin on options like 'Wait For Moderator' and 'Listen Only' an optional field.

We found that it was more work for a participant to enter both a conference number and a pin number to enter their conference.

Our solution is that moderators join the conference by entering their conference number and pin number in the same entry field when prompted.

It looks like this:

New Conference Telephone Lines

Greymouse Teleconference is switching to a new telephone line provider, due to recent issues that some of our customers have experienced in the last few days.

02 8022 8481 (Sydney, NSW)
02 6113 1517 (Canberra, ACT)
03 8399 9457 (Melbourne, VIC)
03 6281 3423 (Hobart, TAS)
08 8919 4444 (Darwin, NT)
08 8121 9362 (Adelaide, SA)
08 6102 7257 (Perth, WA)
09 887 1020 (Auckland, NZ)
+61(2) 8022 8481 (International)
These new telephone numbers are active right now.

Local Time Zone Support in Conference Control Panel & Notification Emails

As NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS & SA have started daylight savings, Greymouse releases its latest feature

After much customer feedback of how confusing timezones can be to manage when participants are joining a teleconference from around Australia, we have added local time zone support.

You are now able to :- create, view & edit conferences in your local timezone, including when daylight savings is in effect - and it works for any time zone around the world.

Daylight Savings - Starts 4 October 2009

For the ACT, New South Wales, South Australia & Victoria daylight savings is now in effect, requiring everyone to wind their clocks FORWARD one hour.

As our conference service is Brisbane based the times you have set your conferences to start at will remain the same.
(EG: 10:00AM Brisbane time, will now be 11:00AM Sydney Time)

If you intend on having your conferences at the same time as before daylight savings, you must also set your conference to start an hour earlier.

If you require assistance in changing your conference start time please contact support.

Recording System Improvements - Continued

This is a continuation from our last recording update post.

We have continued to improve our teleconference recording system and below are our latest updates.

  • MP3 has silence trimmed from file.
  • Email is sent when recording is ready for download.
  • Ability to embed recording link publicly for download

Note: Recordings are charged at 5¢ per minute per download.

Beta Skype Conference Calls - Now use Skype-To-Skype to dial us

Skype For AsteriskGreymouse is beta testing a Skype add-on for our PBX system called 'Skype For Asterisk' from Digium, this add-on allows for integration between Skype and our teleconferencing system. This enhancement allows for our teleconferencing solution to bridge calls from a 1800 Number, Local Telephone Numbers, SIP (VoIP) & Skype calls all in the same Teleconference room.

The Skype dialling method is a Skype-to-Skype call which means the participant will not incur a fee for dialling our Skype account and for the use of our service we have a discount rate for Skype calls, the host pays 5¢ per minute per Skype line for the use of our service.

Feature: New & Improved Teleconference Recording System

As some of you have noticed we have released our new teleconference recording system.

After lots of feedback and talks with our users about our old recording system and its limitations, we have worked long and hard to remake our teleconference recording system.

So you might be asking yourself, well what changed?

  • Removed 'moderator call in to start recording' restriction.
  • Added recording ability for Permanent/Non timed conferences.
  • Web page shows if the conference is currently being recorded.
